Kettlebells (KB’s) are not new to the fitness world. They were once found in every gymnasium in the nation. You might have even seen a photo of an old time strongman lifting a kettlebell. KB’s are made from cast iron, with a U-shape handle. They resemble a cannon ball with a handle or as some people describe it a Mickey Mouse looking weight. Kettlebells are very compact and come in different weights which make it an ideal workout piece of equipment both men and women.

KB’s are a functional exercise that will improve your flexibility, strength and balance. Kettlebells or Girevoy as they call it in Russia is their national sport. KB’s have been used by the Speztnaz the Russian Special Forces and Russian Athletes for many years. This was one of the secrets and advantages that the former Soviet Union used to dominate world athletics and the Olympics.

Today they are currently being used by Athletes, martial artist, movie stars, SWAT teams and the military. Sylvester Stallone, Penelope Cruz and Lance Armstrong are known to train with Kettlebells. Even Bruce Lee worked out his lats with a kettlebell. Kettlebells are lifted by using natural momentum with proper posture and alignment. Kettlebell training will give you a low impact aerobic and anaerobic functional workout. They can also be used to strengthen injured body parts and rehabilitation. They are ideal for weight loss and building powerful functional muscles.

Before the Russians began using them they were used in other cultures. Shaolin had iron padlocks, as well as the granite padlocks which were similar to today’s kettlebells.  In Okinawa they adopted them for karate at approximately the 14th century.  Simultaneously, the Middle Eastern and Indian cultures also had Iron Kettlebells. Today Sumo wrestlers are using kettlebells, stone padlocks, and granite balls for their strength training.

In an article in TIME Magazine it said “For more intensity try kettlebells...it's a full body workout, aerobic and strength-building." Due to the explosive nature of the lift they are a great tool for athletes. When lifting use your natural momentum, they provide a low impact total body workout. This simple tool is small, portable and will make you more powerful that what you could ever imagine.

Today kettlebells are being rediscovered thanks to the leadership of former Spetznat trainer, international fitness author, nationally-ranked kettlebell lifter and Master of Sports, Pavel Tsatsouline. Also brining kettlebells to mainstream fitness is Dave Ganulin of Kettlebell Concepts of New York.

A studies done in Russian compared Kettlebells against specific forms of conditioning. They were divided into two groups. One group practiced the testing protocol of push ups, pull ups, a run, a sprint, etc. The other group lifted Kettlebells. In spite of no rehearsal of the testing protocol, the Kettlebell group actually posted better scores in the events! Kettlebells are extremely safe and productive under the guidance of a trained professional.
